TURNING 21: LIFE LESSONS

In my last post I already talked about 21 things about myself. I decided to write the post because yesterday was my birthday. I actually ended up having a really lovely, chilled day with my family and will be celebrating it a bit more this Saturday with the rest of my family.

In my 21 things about me post, I also talked to you about how I have learned quite a lot in this past year. Now at first I wanted to write a post talking about 21 life lessons. But I am not sure I can even come up with 21 life lessons. So for now I am just going to stick with a few life lessons I have learned over the past few years that really helped me grow up and become the person I am today. Now I feel like I am never truly done with learning lessons in life. I am very much looking forward to learning even more life lessons while getting older and older.

YOU BE YOU

While growing up I had a hard time in high school. I had the worst time when I was 14 and was very depressed because I was trying so hard to fit into some sort of group at high school. Trying to fit in is what made my me feel depressed and I feel like no one should ever try to fit in too much, because it’s usually not worth it. Eventually you will find all the friends you want to hang out with.

DO YOUR BEST

This is something my parents always told my brother and I while growing up. They never pressured us into setting unachievable goals. My parents always told us to do your best, because that means you have tried the best you could. Failed the first time? Try harder the next time. Do your best in every situation and you eventually will achieve your goals.

ALWAYS TRY TO BE KIND

There’s no reason to be rude, to anyone. It’s crazy to think how much hate people are throwing around online in the last couple of years. I would never want to hurt anyone on purpose, so I always try to be kind to people. I also try to be very patient with everyone. Being kind to people is always best and you never know what it might get you. I have been tested a lot throughout my years at uni and I definitely know I also know I did not handle things accordingly. But I am trying to be much better and do better, especially in 2018.

FIND SOMETHING YOU'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT

Find something you’re passionate about. Another thing my parents told my brother and I while growing up is to do something that we’re both passionate about. They never told me to become a dentist or something like that. They let me figure out who I want to be and that’s one of the best life lessons I have learned. I feel like I am still in progress of finding out what exactly I am passionate about, as it’s always something different. I really want to be more passionate about photography and my writing skills.

PEOPLE IN THEIR TWENTIES USUALLY DON'T HAVE THEIR LIVES TOGETHER, AND THAT'S FINE

People in their twenties usually don’t really have their lives together just yet, and that’s completely fine. While growing up I always thought people really had their lives together by the time they’re 21. This is something that might have been the case around 100 years ago, but it’s definitely not the case by the time you’re in your twenties now. I definitely don’t think it’s bad to not have things figured out just yet.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH GREAT PEOPLE AND HAPPINESS WILL FIND YOU

Surround yourself with great people and happiness will find you. Growing up I discovered that being around happy people, people with a positive attitude or just generally great people will make you feel whole as a person. Positivity in life is very affective and negativity spreads like a wild fire. If you want to feel happy, or whole, as a person, then get rid of any negativity in your life. Now of course you can’t always run away from bad or negative situations. But always try to see the positive things in life so happiness and feeling complete are part of your life.

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH STRIVING FOR PERFECTION

Being a perfectionist is nothing to be ashamed of, it’s usually something that people appreciate most about you. You have to know when to let go of your perfectionism if it is holding you back. Perfectionism can be quite hard to deal with, especially when you’re working with a limited amount of time or resources. At times like this, it is no problem to do your best and let your perfectionism go.

APPRECIATE THE SMALL THINGS IN LIFE

Appreciate the small things in life. My new years resolution was to appreciate the small things in life more often. Over the past few years I was never really content with things in life, while I still had a lot to be thankful or appreciative for. So this year I want to appreciate the small things in life, even when I have had the worst day. For instance, I could have the worst days at uni. I would be tired, stressed and would have multiple panic attacks a day. My day would always be better because my friends are at uni too, trying to cheer me up, talking to me. Then another positive thing about that day would be seeing my parents again, talking with them and appreciating my time with them.

LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD TOO

In a time where it’s all about social media, it’s better to switch off every so often and go back to the real world. I find that people nowadays are so caught up in social media. It’s weird to have a conversation with someone and they end up completely ignoring you because they get a text. So nowadays I try to put my phone down when I am with friends or people. Watch people and the world go by while you don’t look at your phone. And definitely don’t be rude and look at your phone every time you get a text message while you’re with a friend, family or getting to know someone new. Enjoy the people around you, they might be gone sooner than you’d like. Look up from your phone and appreciate things such as people, nature or even go people watching.

DRINK ENOUGH WATER

Okay, so can you tell that my life lessons are slowly starting to dry out. Drinking enough water definitely is important. It cleanses your skin, it flushes out toxins and helps me get rid of my painful, annoying cystic acne. Drinking water basically has lots of positive benefits, so always try to get as much of it inside of you a day as you can.

ALWAYS TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN

While being on the topic of your skin, definitely also take care of it while becoming older. Always (!) remove your makeup before you go to bed. I don’t even know who would go to bed with makeup on, because I would feel gross. Use SPF on a daily basis, moisturize your skin and most importantly: don’t use too much makeup that will clog your pores. Don’t cover up those acne scars with piles of foundation, powder and what not. Let your skin breathe and it will recover by itself.

    1. Thank you so much Alexandra! You're way too kind 💕 It's just this thing that I always had in mind that people had their lives together by now. Turns out most of us don't have their lives together just yet! 😊 Happy weekend lovely xx
