HOW I DESTRESS BEFORE BED

In Saturday's post I already mentioned that I tend to overthink as soon as I get into bed. This year I made it a resolution of mine to destress a lot more before I go to bed. I try to be more aware of actually going to bed at night, whilst trying to let the events that happened throughout the day go. There are a few steps in my night routine that I need to do before I actually go to bed. These are the steps in my 'destress for bed' routine.

Take my makeup off with a hot towel

The first thing I usually do before I go to bed is to take off my makeup with a hot towel. This is usually something I do after I have had dinner. If I don't do this after I have had dinner, there's a bigger chance that I actually will be awake until 12 or 1 in the morning. So being aware of taking my makeup off after I have had dinner is the first step to destress before I go to bed. Taking my makeup off basically is the best feeling of the day, and doing it with a hot towel is even better. I always take my makeup off with a hot towel ever since I was 15, and somehow the feeling of a lukewarm/hot towel makes me feel so relaxed!

Drink a cup of tea

Another thing that makes me feel very relaxed during the evening is drinking a cup of tea. Again, this is something I have done for the longest time, ever since I started having trouble with sleeping at night. It must be ever since I was 9 that I have had a cup of tea before I go to bed. I usually either drink a cup of green tea or some sort of tea that is supposed to make you fall asleep. I highly recommend avoiding tea with caffeine in it, and I usually avoid black teas at night, as I feel that they make me feel less sleepy.

Use a face mask

If I'm feeling extra fancy at night, I also like to use a face mask. Actually being aware of putting a face mask on before I go to sleep, also makes my brain realize that it's time for bed soon. A face mask starts to make me feel calm, gets me ready for bed and makes me feel calm. Of course I don't do this every single day, but I do find that whenever I do use a face mask, I tend to fall asleep at night quite quickly than when I don't use one. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that I use another hot towel to cleanse the face mask off too.

Use a pillow spray

A pillow spray is essential in my night routine. I have such a hard time falling asleep and always get recommended to use a pillow spray. Ever since December I have made an effort to use the pillow spray consistently at night. I usually spray a pillow spray onto my pillow at around 10 at night, when I am ready to go to bed soon.

Read a book or a magazine

Books are also essential in me destressing before bed. Last year my phone usually was the last thing I touched before I went to bed, usually making my head go into overdrive. This year I try to avoid being on my phone this much before I go to bed. I already changed something in my routine, where I don't check social media as Instagram and Twitter at night anymore. But what really helped me was to start reading books again at night. I used to do this all the time when I was younger and I am really trying to make an effort to read a book or magazine at night before I fall asleep. I find that once I read a book, I am more likely to fall asleep between 11 and 11:30 at night, which is such a record for me. Whereas before I would never be able to fall asleep before 2 in the morning(!).

These are just a few things I do on a daily basis to get ready for bed. As an overthinker it can be quite hard to do things like this, so once I start to notice that my brain starts going into overdrive, I usually pick up a notebook and start writing my thoughts down. It really helps with clearing my mind at night and I can start focussing on the rest of my nighttime routine!

  1. Really interesting reading this as I struggle to sleep also, I've started using pillow sprays and reading before bed as I know they definitely destress me. I'm trying to follow the 'come off technology an hour before bed and only go on it an hour after waking up' to try and detach myself from my phone. I know my head is a lot clearer if I'm not on my phone so I'm really trying!

    1. Ah thank you Lucy, I'm so glad you liked the post! These are just some really easy steps to destress before going to bed! I definitely feel like I should not go straight onto my phone after I have woken up the next day, as that usually leaves me feeling stressed too, but that's something I am currently still struggling with and am hoping to change as well :) xx

  3. This is really interest, it can be so difficult to unwind. I'm terrible and always go on my phone in bed but I might switch this to reading a book. Also I love your coat xx
