5 THINGS TO DO DURING A STAYCATION

This is my first year of staying home during the actual summer. We’re going on holiday a little later in the year, instead of going for our usual July/August summer holidays, which to me sounds great too. While everyone is away on their holidays I know it can be quite boring staying home. But this year I am determined to make the most of my ‘staycation’, hence my summer bucket list this year. If you are in the same boat and are staying home this summer, then welcome aboard! I thought I would share a couple of things I still want to do during my staycation to hopefully inspire you too to go out this summer and have an amazing time, even when you’re staying home.

What is the definition of a staycation? Google says a “staycation is a holiday spent in someone’s home country rather than abroad or one spent at home and involving trips to local attractions”. I would pretty much agree with that definition and my five things to do during your staycation revolve around spending time doing local activities too.

Visit a city you haven’t visited before

I am a major home person and love to spend my free time in and around the house just chilling. Some days it can get quite boring though, which is why visiting another city is on top of my list of things to do during a staycation. I don’t know about you, but I have so many cities in The Netherlands left to visit. Whether you want to visit a city across the country or the county, it’s so fun to discover a new city as it’s one of those activities that can easily make you feel as if you’re away on holiday in another country.

Be a tourist in your own city

It’s also super fun to be a touristy in your own city. Whether you are new to the city you currently live in, or have lived here forever like me, there’s always some neighbourhood you can explore or museums you have not visited before. When was the last time you did something for the first time in your hometown? I feel like there’s always something cute or fun going on in town, especially during summer. So there’s probably something to do for you.

Plan a spa/self-care day

A little pampering never hurt anybody. So one of my things I still want to do is plan a whole day revolving around taking care of myself. I think it’s such a nice way to really recharge your battery and it doesn’t really have to cost a lot of money. Try to look online for some sort of a spa treatment deal on Groupon, my favourite place to look for cheaper activities. If you’re more of a massage kinda gal like me, than I would recommend looking at a massage place via Treatwell, which also offers spa deals if you’d like. A staycation doesn’t have to be super cheap, you deserve to treat yourself during those couple of weeks off.

Discover a new local park

I love wandering around parks, but I feel like I tend to always go to the two to three same parks in my hometown. It’s because I know my way around the parks and know I’ll enjoy my time there. I was just looking on my google maps for a bit the other day looking at my hometown – as you do… And I found so many parks I have never been to before. It made me quite excited actually to try and find new parks this summer to chill in and read a book or have a picnic with friends.

Stroll at the local market

If there’s one thing that will always remind me of a summer holiday, it’s a local market. I remember when I went to France back in 2012, I went to a little French market early in the morning. Especially when it’s super warm and lovely weather, I would like to wake up early and stroll at a market. There’s a Farmer’s Market in my city every Wednesday, so I can imagine myself strolling around in the morning at that market to look for some fruit, vegetables and bread. If there aren’t any new markets for you to discover in your own hometown, than visit the next one. Check online to see if there’s any market on, because you will easily spend an entire morning at a (new) market.

I would love to know what you are up to this summer. Are you staying home or going away? And what things do you like to do during the summer?

  1. These are all great tips and things to do Laura! I feel like we are often a bit blind and oblivious to what's actually just at our doorsteps even though there is so much to do if you just open your mind and do some research too. You can definitely get into the holiday mood without a booking a trip away! I hope you have a lovely summer staycationing haha ♥︎
